Understanding your audience is not a short process. That doesn't mean it is difficult at the same time so what you need to do is dive deep into the layers of the segment of people that you are targeting.

The Persona! To state it properly, what you need to do is to create a persona of your ideal follower this explains the behavior the characteristics, and the psychological factors this follower has for example let's say that you are a person who's making content about food around the world your ideal customer is someone who loves to go to restaurants maybe loves to cook and enjoys exploring new cultures. You can name this person John for example and start building the character of John as a single male who has a 9 to 5 job enjoys cooking and loves to go out and travel to explore new cultures. 

On the other hand, there is another Persona called Susan who is a female in her thirties living in a certain city around the world and she is a mother who loves making new dishes and trying new kinds of food.

Keywords Are GemsNow keep in mind that these people are always Googling and scanning social media looking for certain kinds of information therefore there are certain keywords that you can use to understand the concerns, ambitions, and needs of these people. For example: John might be looking for a tourism program during Christmas vacation somewhere warmer than New York city where he lives. Therefore, he will Google something like this: “Warm Christmas vacation under $2000”

Also, There are many websites and platforms these people use to ask questions and get some information other than social media of course such as Quora or Reddit.

The Golden Circle Finding details about these people doesn't always have to be online what I recommend usually is to start with an inner and a smaller circle of those friends that you have some of them might be big fans of you. Understand them and watch their behavior closely to build the character which is called in marketing the PERSONA. The strength of this method is in the ability to communicate with these people face to face and understand and ask them questions so you can gain information
